This was news, news that put a different light on things
After Scout overhears spectators in the court talking about Atticus, she begins to understand more about Atticus' involvement with the case. Many people would tease Scout about the fact that her father was 'defending a nigger', but what Scout hadn't realized before was that Atticus had to defend Tom Robinson weather he wanted or not. He was appointed by Judge Taylor as Tom’s defense council even when the job should have gone to Maxwell Green, a new, untried lawyer who usually received court appointed cases. She was still confused about why he hadn't said anything to Scout or Jem about it, as she would have used it many times in defending him and themselves. But the town's attitude would have stayed the same as the fact that Atticus aimed to defend Tom was what they disagreed with.
Over time throughout the book Scout has different interpretations on what is going on at the time, but gradually begins to understand the difference between right and wrong and takes on Atticus’ belief in treating and respecting everyone as an individual.
