Mennonites
_A wagonload of ladies rattled past us. They wore cotton sunbonnets and dresses with long sleeves. A bearded man in a wool hat drove them. 'Yonder's some Mennonites,' Jem said to Dill.
The Mennonites are a religious group based around the teachings of the Christian religion. They are named after FrisianMenno Simons (1486-1561), who, through his writings educated and informed people about the teachings of the earlier Swiss founders. The teachings of the Mennonites were founded on their beleif in both the mission and ministry of Jesus Christ, which they continued to stand by despite persecution by the various Roman Catholic and Protestant states. Rather than fight, the majority survived by fleeing to neighboring states where ruling families were tolerant of their beliefs and ideas. Over the years, Mennonites have become known as one of the historic peace churches because of their commitment to non violence.
The Mennonites are mentioned in this scene which demonstrates how famous the trial has become because Harper Lee wants readers to reflect on the idea of hard and fast moral judgements. Later in the parade a similar group attack Miss Maudie. See 'He that cometh in vanity departeth in darkness!'
